Effects of Principal Interns' Instructional Coaching on General Education Teachers' Practices Regarding Special Education Students

Abstract

There have been no group of students that have struggled more greatly in the American school system than students with disabilities. The literature review was comprised of the roles of the principal which included the importance of instructional leadership that led to becoming an instructional coach (IC). The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine the effects of principal interns’ (PI) instructional coaching on education for special education students in a principal preparation program. Video recordings of pre- and post-conferences between the PIs and coached teachers revealed that the most common themes discussed in pre-conferences were students’ characteristics and needs as well as differentiation while teachers’ reflections of effective and ineffective strategies were seen common in post-conferences.
