The Lingering Impact of School Segregation in the United States and South Africa

Abstract

This work builds on earlier historical research that examined segregation and the effort to desegregate schools in the United States and South Africa. Our earlier work examined a 30 year period of Black resistance to racism in both countries. In this presentation we aim to trace linger impact of segregation and how it effects schooling today in the two countries. We trace the cultural modes of resistance to segregated schooling in these two environments, and how these modes of resistance continue to impact education. Although we do not conclude that South Africa's apartheid is a mirror image of discrimination in the United States; the residential and education experience of blacks in the United States are comparable to African/Blacks in South Africa.
