Planned Detours: Identifying Barriers to Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program Implementation

Abstract

This study involved surveying current teachers to learn their perspectives regarding barriers to the implementation of Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program(ing) (CSPAP). The survey was developed using barriers previously suggested in the literature. Current teachers (n=437) provided their ratings of seventeen barriers along a 7-point Likert scale and also had space to provide qualitative feedback about each suggested barrier. Teachers rated each barriers’ effect across the five CSPAP categories (Before and after school, during school, in Physical Education, with family engagement, with community engagement). Barriers were noted to affect all five components of the CSPAP model. Overall, high school teachers perceived the suggested barriers to be more limiting than both elementary and middle school teachers.
