Abstract

This project focused on supporting students living in poverty from an equity and inclusion perspective. We created a 10 indicator accountability framework illuminating poverty to seek out inequities and make the impact of poverty visible to spark a renewed call to action. The accountability framework was conceptually based on three interrelated factors: socioeconomic, student achievement, and equity of opportunity. The notion of raising the bar and closing the achievement gap was a key design feature. Results showed a significant poverty gradient effect across all 10 indicators, highlighting the impact of poverty on student opportunity and achievement. The story we have told utilizing a poverty indicator approach brings poverty closer to home by the creation of an accountability framework.
