Seeking School Counselor Help Among Asian American Students: Socioeconomic and Academic At-Risk Characteristics in Context

Abstract

Using a nationally representative sample of 921 Asian American students selected from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (Ingels, et al, 2011), the study identifies socio-economic characteristics and an academic at-risk factor that predict seeking school counselor help. Little research has presented a close examination of Asian American students’ helping behaviors in high schools. Specifically, little is known about characteristics of who are typically likely to seek school counselor help for academic, personal, and college/career concerns. Exploring factors related to seeing school counselors are particularly important for Asian American youths, since school counselor contacts are associated with academic achievement and subsequent college outcomes.
