Abstract

This paper presents a literature review of peer-reviewed publications related to disciplinary literacies. Although Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards have increased calls for attention to disciplinary literacy, scholars still strive to articulate what is meant by disciplinary literacy. This literature review found that: There are few research studies of disciplinary literacy, and research is needed throughout K-12 schooling. Less attention has focused on disciplinary literacy at elementary levels than at middle and high school levels. Despite the dramatic increase in research on multimodal literacy, little scholarship focuses on the intersection of disciplinary literacy and multimodality. Scholars need to further develop intersections between social justice, critical literacy, and disciplinary literacy and carry out research at these intersections.
