This study examined the relationship between preschool teachers’ responsive interactions and the children’s receptive and expressive vocabulary outcomes. Audiovisual data from the dramatic play center interactions were analyzed. Then the children’s outcome measures were compared between two groups (high and low responsive-interaction classrooms). The results indicate that the high responsive-interaction classrooms exhibited a steeper slope from pre to post in the expressive vocabulary outcome measure than the low classrooms. Alternatively, there was no significant difference between two groups for the receptive vocabulary results. Implications for practice, policy and future research are discussed.
