Schools' Capacity to Critically Evaluate Research: A Multilevel Perspective

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Confederation 3

Abstract

The IES-funded Center for Research Use in Education is developing and validating a survey to measure the role of data and research in school-based decisions through collection of multilevel data from district and school staff nationwide. In this paper, we present results from two large-scale pilots of this survey with 869 educators from 58 schools. Results show that most educators score relatively on our survey scale of capacity to critique research. This occurs despite widespread participation in pre-service and in-service training and experiences intended (explicitly or implicitly) to improve engagement with and capacity to critically evaluate research. However, results also show that most schools have at least one staff member who feels confident in his/her ability to critique research.
