Poster #25 - Shaping Teacher Candidates' Perceptions of Planning, Instruction, and Assessment Using Accomplished Teachers' Video and Commentary

Mon, April 8, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Teacher preparation programs face increased demands to link teacher candidates [TCs] to expert teachers. Video analysis provides opportunities to re-imagine how TCs learn the language of the profession and develop visions of effective practice. Several platforms offer expert teacher videos and provide windows into practice that can be used to buttress TCs’ professional learning. Current video-based systems are limited, however, because they do not shed light on teachers' planning, analysis, and reflection. This paper examines the efficacy of a platform that brings forward accomplished teachers’ thinking alongside their videos. The study’s findings indicated that the pairing of video and commentary helped TCs unpack the complexities of decision-making that accomplished teachers engage in when they plan, teach, and reflect on practice.
