Combating Gender and Sexuality Norms Through Queer Contemplative Pedagogy

Abstract

This paper examines the curricular efforts that "Eleanor" made to challenge high school students' binaried/normative understandings of gender and sexuality in a gender studies course. In researching various approaches, she adopted what she termed a "queer contemplative pedagogy" that integrated elements of queer pedagogy, such as "alterity" or othering, with contemplative teaching, including meditation and free writing.
