Abstract

Schools can play a major role in preparing students for social responsibility and civic engagement through critical literacy education. However, a focus on critical literacy does not prevent teachers from explicitly teaching skills and strategies for writing or connecting writing tasks to students’ lived experiences. In fact, to realize their full compositional power, students need to see connections between writing tasks and their lives and possess foundational writing skills and strategies appropriate for multiple genres and audiences. This theoretical paper presents powerful writing pedagogy (PWP) as a framework for writing instruction that blends evidence-based practices for writing, factors aimed at increasing authenticity and relevance, and critical text production that seeks to have an impact on a social injustice.
