Abstract

In this study, we examined student perceptions of classroom management through semi-directed interviews of 39 students in grades 3-8. Qualitative data analysis showed that emergent themes in students perceptions aligned with five need-based categories based on Maslow’s theory: Basic & Physical Needs, Safety & Psychological Needs, Relationship & Community Needs, Self-Esteem Needs, and Self-Actualization through Learning Needs. Findings include frequencies and descriptions of the students’ responses in each category. By listening to student perceptions of their classroom experiences and analyzing how their needs are met or not met, we can develop practices to prepare teachers more effectively for meeting the self-actualization needs of students.
