Whole-Person and Research-Focused Career and Technical Education in Taiwan: Students' and Teachers' Perceptions

Abstract

This paper reports on a study of Taiwan’s career and technical education system. The investigation combines the results gathered using three methods: a case study, a survey, and interviews. The paper focuses its attention on the lessons to be learned from the Taiwanese experience, in particular its ability to combine the goals of developing active citizens, productive workers, and lifelong learners, while remaining research-centered. Overall, the paper finds that the balance between what could be construed as opposite goals remains a strong source of inspiration for students and teachers, though the extent to which the system delivers its promise and whether it can continue to do so is not as strongly felt.
