Abstract

Lifelong learning is an important part of professional practice in Learning Design and Technology (LDT). This paper reports on findings based on interviews of 30 LDT professionals, and explores their attitudes towards lifelong learning, motivations for seeking learning experiences, and learning strategies and resources used. As in other design disciplines, there is a relationship between design practice and learning. Participants indicate that lifelong learning is part of their job. They learn to address specific project needs as well as to stay up-to-date. Learning experiences are generally self-directed, experiential and social. We recommend that organizations promote lifelong learning by designing a supportive environment and culture that encourages interaction, flexible scheduling, and access to tools and resources, including creating and gathering precedent.
