School Counselors' Future Plans: The Contribution of Role Characteristics, Social Support, and Occupational Self-Efficacy

Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 717A

Abstract

The study explored school counselors' plans for the future. We used structural equation modeling to test an empirical model that examines relationships between role characteristics and social support as antecedents of occupational efficacy that serves as a partial mediating variable between the antecedents and life and professional satisfaction and future career plans. Participants were 483 female school counselors (Mage = 43.68, SD = 9.32). Results indicated an adequate index fit, and demonstrated the contribution of occupational self-efficacy, together with role characteristics and social support resources, to future career plans, life satisfaction, and professional satisfaction. The findings emphasize the importance of role clarity and social support in school counselors' plans to stay in their current profession and current job.
