This paper argues that the Negro World served as an important medium of informal education during the 1920s. I suggest that rather than being drawn to the particulars of Garvey’s call for “Africa for the Africans,” black readers valued the way the paper provided a framework in which they came to understand their oppression and allowed them to see themselves in a larger diasporic struggle against white supremacy
