Exploring the Relationship Between College Attendance and Access to College Counseling in High School

Abstract

With the many obstacles students face on the path to postsecondary enrollment, previous research (Venezia, 2008; Perna, 2008; McDonough, 1997) has found that high school counselors can play an important roles as 'guides' and sources of college-going information and advice, especially for students from under-represented backgrounds. However, counselors also face competing demands on their time. This study uses a nationally-representative dataset to consider the role that access to college counseling plays in college enrollment. This analysis also adds nuance to previous work that considers counselor caseload size by adding a measure of how much time counselors spend on college-related advising.
