Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 704

Abstract

Among many factors contributing to equal learning opportunities for students in the classroom, teacher questioning can be one of these factors as it is a core practice that initiates and facilitates student participation. This study examines how preservice teachers use questioning in classrooms from the perspective of equal learning opportunity. It found that there was a significant difference in the number of questions asked to students. Among these questions, participants often ignore students sitting on a side of the teachers and posed more questions to boys and students sitting in front of them. The findings suggest that it is important for teacher preparation programs to help preservice teacher learn how to regulate their attention as they teach.
