Afro-Latinx Undergraduate Students Countering Their Racialization Through Afro-Resistencia

Abstract

AfroLatinxs do not fall neatly within the riding parameters of U.S. socially constructed ethnic and racial categories. Within the U.S. they are forced to identify as either Black or Latinx but not both. They remain largely invisible in plain sight since phenotypically they blend in to one group while culturally to another. This study centered on the cultural and racial identity development of AfroLatinx undergraduate students. Findings illustrate how AfroLatinx students engage in Afroresistencia as a strategy in countering their racialization on campus. They actively celebrate their AfroLatinidad by embracing language, culture, and the rejection of social ethnic and racial categories.
