Transmediation as Deep Meditation: Infusing the Arts in Qualitative Analysis

Abstract

In this paper, we explore how transmediation (Suhor, 1984) can be used as a form of analysis in qualitative research - one that helps us conduct aesthetically based research. We argue that to “unflatten” (Sousanis, 2015) what we are studying, we need to blend both conscious, hierarchical, patterned based analysis with more exploratory, meditative, associative based analysis - something similar to what Bresler (2006) calls aesthetically based research. We offer two explorations of how transmediation helped us produce new understandings about our data. We offer these, not as step-by-step processes to be duplicated, but as examples of the ways researchers might use transmediation, and Arts Based Educational Research in purposeful and productive ways.
