Identifying differential item functioning (DIF) is necessary to assure the validity of any educational or psychological assessment. In particular, evaluating DIF in the context of cognitively diagnostic assessment is challenging because of probable lack of model fit. The present study proposes nonparametric approaches for evaluating DIF in diagnostic measurement. We examine the performance of the proposed methods in simulation studies and real data analysis in comparison with the parametric Wald test. The study identifies situations where each parametric and nonparametric approach is more suitable under varying factors related to cognitive diagnosis.
