Reaching in, Across, and Through With Preservice Teachers: Examining a Curriculum of Rereadings of Self

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

In this paper, three teacher educators share their design, enactment, and reflections on a curriculum for preservice teachers. Drawn from scholarship from across the post- and critical disciplines and guided by Kumashiro’s (2002) concept of re-reading, the Re-Reading Stories of Self (RSS) curriculum was taught over a 16-week period, during which preservice teachers engaged in a recursive process of writing and feedback as they wrote and re-read multimodal autobiographical narratives. The researchers argue that the RSS curriculum is one way to guide preservice teachers through a critical and reflexive examination of their intersectional identities and experiences in order to expand their imaginations beyond the binaries that dominate their (and all of our) stories of self.
