Development of Youth Civic Identities Through Action Civics and Youth Participatory Action Research

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This study echoes the theme of AERA 2019 to push back against the post-truth paradigm. The goal of this mixed methods study was to analyze how action civics classes guided by service-learning (SL) pedagogy and youth participatory action research supported the development of positive civic identities among diverse youth. The purpose of studies like this one is to help develop educational environments which foster educated and critical citizens that can do their own research, develop their literacies, evaluate information, develop critical consciousness, plan action, take action, and reflect. In short they become active participants of a vibrant democracy that are resilient against totalitarian takeover attempts.
