This self-study examines my experiences teaching a foundations of education course through the written reflections it provoked and the student understandings about teaching and reflection that emerged from disclosing these reflections to them throughout the course. An analysis of my journals revealed several themes: Tension between vision and practice, contradictory student preferences, and niceness and neutrality; from reading these reflections, students came to see (and accept) teaching as uncertain. This study illuminates the promises and challenges of modeling reflective practice for pre-service teachers.
