The public sectors are in a process of transformation in which rationality, ethics and moral values of the market are being implemented. In education, the reform is based on curricular and large-scale assessments policies. This paper seeks to identify how curricular and assessment policies of the education system of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, operate, regulating teacher’s autonomy and how research could suggest a new agenda against performativity culture. Analysis concluded these policies limit teacher autonomy through three mechanisms: subalternization, accountability and pedagogic control. Furthermore, we argue that one way of promoting curricular practices centered on autonomy is to value teaching profession.
