Teacher Choice-Driven Action Research: An Innovative Professional Development Program Supported by a University Partnership

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Carelton

Abstract

The purpose is to introduce a PD initiative that features teacher-driven action research highlighting a partnership between an urban public school district and an urban university. Facilitated by university faculty of different disciplines, this PD effort engaged practicing teachers in the development and execution of AR projects with the Teach-Reflect-Teach model, a specific collaborative action research model focused on improving teaching and student learning. Launched in 2013, eighty-five action research projects have been conducted. This year, seventeen professors collaborated with K-12 teachers to complete the AR projects. The presenter will introduce this impactful PD model via k-12 school and university partnership, discuss lessons learned, and provide implications for using teacher-driven AR as a meaningful PD model for K-12 schools.
