This paper looks at the differences in academic achievement between students who enter universities through an English proficiency test and those who pass through an intensive English language program. Using a ‘fuzzy’ regression discontinuity, we analyzed 1754 cases at a large research-intensive institution in the Southwest of the United States. The preliminary results revealed great similarity between the populations of students but an evolving data set leaves room for potential differences.
