Latina Students From College Preparatory Charter High School to First Year of College

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Osgoode Ballroom

Abstract

This study examines the experiences of 10 Latina students from a college-preparatory urban charter high school to their first year at predominantly white four-year colleges or universities. Using mixed methods, we explore the relationship between being college ready, culturally engaging campus environments and their sense of belonging in college. Three salient themes emerged: Sense of belonging through on-campus involvement, the gap between ‘feeling’ college-ready vs. academic performance, and holistic support.
