Factors Supporting Black Male Students' Resiliency: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

In this article, the author conducted a systematic review of literature on Black male resiliency in middle and high school. Using Nasir and Cooks’ (2009) definition of ideational artifacts (i.e., ideas about oneself and one’s relationship to and place in the practice and the world, as well as ideas about what is valued and what is good), the author illustrated how various ideational factors supported the academic success of Black male students. Additionally, the author presented the methodological characteristics of the 27 articles selected for review, highlighting the studies’ purposes, participants, and data collection methods. Publication trends were also discussed.
