Learning in Context: Principles for English Language Learner Instruction and Emerging Teacher Dispositions

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

Culturally and linguistically diverse students continue to lag behind in academic achievement compared to native English speakers. Common Core standards emphasize the use of academic language in demonstrating content understanding. To prepare students in meeting content and language goals, teachers must be knowledgeable and capable of providing supports that meet the needs of these students. This study focuses on providing professional development and coaching to teachers so they may better serve their students and pre-service teachers. The results of this study show what dispositions emerge as teachers infuse Stanford’s Understanding Language (2013) Six Key Principles for English language learner instruction in their classrooms.
