Assessing the Role of Ethnic Student Organizations in Higher Education: A Literature Review

Abstract

Within postsecondary institutions, one of the mainstays in co-curricular experiences across the nation is participation in student organizations. Generally, the more involved a student is on campus, the more they gain from the college experience ultimately influencing student success (Astin, 1993). Given the demographic changes in the US population within the last several decades and its ever-increasing racial and ethnic diversity, an examination into one of the most powerful tools for students of color on college campuses—ethnic student organizations—is due. Utilizing the Multi-Contextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments framework (Hurtado, Alvarez, Guillermo-Wann, Cuellar & Arellano, 2012), this review answer the question: What postsecondary outcomes are linked to participation in ethnic student organizations as evidenced in the published scholarship?
