Abstract

This research uses data from the Head Start FACES 2014 cohort to examine the teacher characteristics that predict the quality of teachers' relationships with families. Teachers provided self-report data about their relationships with families using the Family/Provider Teacher Relationship Quality Short Form questionnaire. Predictors of relationships quality considered include teacher job satisfaction, depression, child-initiated and didactic beliefs, level of education, and years of experience. Results of multiple regression analyses suggest having education beyond a bachelor’s degree and having more child-initiated beliefs about teaching predict more positive relationships with families. The research also considered how these predictors relate to constructs of teacher-family relationships, including family-specific knowledge, attitudes about families, and practices with families.
