The Role of "Opportunity to Learn" in the Geometry Curriculum: A Multilevel Comparison of Six Countries

Abstract

In international assessments like PISA and TIMSS, Asia outperforms England at secondary level, especially in geometry. With recent curriculum reforms there is a need to explore the impact of the curriculum on such student achievement. This paper has two aims. Firstly we present an integrated conceptual framework that combines elements from educational effectiveness, a curriculum model and ‘opportunity to learn’ (OTL). Secondly, using multilevel models, we empirically investigate with TIMSS 2011 data whether ‘opportunity to learn’ in the curriculum is associated with achievement in grade 8 geometry education in a selection of countries. The results show that our conceptualisation of ‘opportunity to learn’ can be useful in analysing curriculum effects and confirms the importance of both OTL and Socio-Economic Status.
