Learning analytics is the trend of digital learning. Many learning analytics studies were based on log file analysis of learning management systems (LMSs). LMS logs are usually generated by student tracking computer programs. However, the access of the trackers or the log files is usually in the hands of the university's LMS team and not open to instructors. Therefore, to understand the student engagement with LMSs in the future, this study developed student trackers for Desire2Learn and Canvas LMSs from instructors' perspective by legally following university LMS policies and with the approval of IRB. The missing data and noise management strategies of two different design patterns are also discussed. Finally, the trackers are applicable to institutions using both LMSs.
