The goal of this paper is to develop understanding of the role of building administrators in supporting English Language Learner (ELL) departments and teachers. Five major themes in the work of school leaders emerged from the data: collaboration, responsiveness, awareness, framing (how the ELL program, teachers, and students were positioned in the school), and trust. To address the gap in the literature surrounding the role of school leadership in the outcomes of high school ELL departments, the author proposes a framework for administrators’ support, including considerations and recommendations for practice, with the goal of increased integration of the ELL department, and access to educational opportunities and improved academic outcomes for ELL students.
