Abstract

This presentation examines the language and a system of education that results in inequity and performance gaps for students in Pakistan. Specifically, this study focuses on the Punjabi language in the Punjab province which is currently forbidden in schools in that region. This research explores the possibilities of using Punjabi, as an asset for enhancing student learning. The research surveys the attitudes and beliefs of teachers and administrators regarding Punjabi as a regional literacy, as well as addressing bilingualism as an asset to student learning and development. This work looks at multi-cultural literacies in the context of formal and informal educational settings in Pakistan.
