Teaching diagnostic competences is an important goal in higher education and simulations are a promising tool to achieve it. However, we do not know enough about learning prerequisites of simulations and complex learning environments may leave weaker learners behind. This study looked at simulation-based learning in math and medicine. In math students had to diagnose the competence level of third-graders. In medicine, students had to diagnose possible diseases of patients. None of the regressions predicting task performance with potential learning prerequisites (shifting, interest, motivation, extraneous load, presence) were significant. While disappointing from the perspective of theory development, this result hints that carefully designed and authentic simulations are a promising tool to teach diagnostic competences to all learners.
