Abstract

Preparing for and applying to college and for financial aid are complex processes, especially for students who will be the first in their family to pursue postsecondary education. High school students rely on a wide array of people to cultivate college aspirations and encourage college plans. This paper focuses on peer support for college going. Drawing on four distinct but related college access studies, authors explore the unique role peers play in encouraging and supporting each other en route to college enrollment. Analysis draws on social capital theory to explain how resources are brokered through peer networks, with attention paid to digital channels.
