Pedagogy of Martial Arts, Pedagogy of Teacher Education: Reframing Understanding Through Collaborative Self-Study

Abstract

This paper builds on earlier work that focussed on how Author 1 learned to teach future teachers by drawing on a lifetime of experiences as a learner of martial arts by exploring a specific set of teaching experiences and practices as a martial arts instructor. Author 2 joins the collaborative self-study not only as a critical friend from an academic perspective, but also as a learner of martial arts from author 1. The result is a collaborative self-study that uses a shared, embodied, teaching and learning experience in martial arts as a catalyst for us to think about our practices as teacher educators, the origins of our pedagogies, and the ways in which we might improve our work with future teachers.
