Abstract

Applied ethics as civic responsibility is a foundational concept in library and information sciences as a service profession.(ALA,2006 &ALA,2008) Integrating an ethical mind-set in pre-professionals requires a synthesis of personal and professional responses in the context of service. Reflection on responsibilities that have larger moral concerns leads individuals to redefine their personal stances – often balancing their convictions with meeting the accepted, stated standards of professional conduct and service to the community (Albertson & Whitaker, 2011). Abstract ideas of democracy, civic responsibility and moral choices that are framed as professional codes of ethics can be viewed as a consistent, necessary component of daily ethical decisions and interactions.
