"I Don't Have Any Black Male Mentors": Mentoring Approaches for Black Male Doctoral Students' Success

Abstract

Mentoring is a critical component in the socialization of Black male doctoral students. The absence of Black male faculty members on some campuses has left a void in the same race-same gender mentoring experiences of many Black male doctoral students. However, at some institutions peers and Black women faculty fill this gap by facilitating a sense of belonging. This paper will examine the significance and influence of peer mentoring and cross-gender mentoring for Black male doctoral students. We propose a holistic model of peer and cross-gender mentoring that can be employed to support Black men’s socialization and success.
