Preservice Teachers' Perspectives on the Barriers of Using Digital Learning Games in Education

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 802A

Abstract

This study examined how preservice teachers perceive the educational value of digital games, how different barriers would prevent them from incorporating games into their lessons, and the strategies that they would execute to resolve these obstacles. Findings showed that perceive teachers perceived academic and commercial-off-the-shelf games both having moderate educational value. The barriers that would most likely hinder the use of digital games are the instructional time that is spent on implementing the game, and the difficulties of finding a game to fit the lesson objectives. Preservice teachers were least concerned about students lacking in gameplaying skills. They reported a variety of strategies for resolving different barriers, but many are still unsure about how to address these obstacles.
