Pushing Back Against Deficit Narratives: Mentoring as Scholars of Color

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

The personal narratives shared in this roundtable present the lived experiences of mentoring and being mentored as minoritized students and faculty from the perspectives of two tenured professors of color. Their knowledge emerges from personal experience, including findings from the first author’s extensive research on mentoring. We would encourage dialogue with our table participants so they may share their personal narrative as well. Knowledge shared by both authors is presented in the spirit of the AERA 2019 theme, Leveraging Education Research in a "Post-Truth" Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence, which underscores the importance and value of our realities and the knowledge we generate to address inequality and to counteract negative stereotyping in higher education.
