Abstract

A challenge to Clark Kerr's much-cited interpretation of the “logic of history” underlying the typical American research university. The author critiques Kerr's argument that the "multiversity" is an amalgam of the English college, German university, and American land-grant institution and offers three alternative institutional forebears, all homegrown: the denominational liberal arts college, the Chautauqua movement, and the industrial training school.
