Transforming Youth as Community Activist: Educating for Political Competence

Abstract

Over one decade ago the Civic Mission of Schools report (Gibson & Levine, 2003) identified goals of civic education and identified six promising practices of civic education pedagogy. One approach to civic education that incorporates many of these promising practices is action civics. In this proposal, we present findings from an action civics program, Youth Act, designed to improve students civic and political understandings and engagement. Specifically, we present results from a four-year longitudinal study examining the changes in students’ community and political engagement as a result of participating in this summer institute.
