Exploring How Asian American and Pacific Islander Undergraduate Students Experience Culturally Engaging Campus Environments

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Within higher education research that studies experiences and success among racially diverse students, scholars have found that culturally relevant and responsive learning environments, such as culturally relevant pedagogy, are conducive to enhance success for racially diverse students, including AAPI students (Museus, 2014). However, there remains limited understanding on the ways in which institutional environments create conditions to validate and empower AAPI populations. Guided by the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) framework and model of student success, the purpose of this study is to explore how AAPI experience different types of culturally relevant or responsive campus environments through cross-racial and cross-ethnic-group comparisons. Findings suggest the need of data disaggregation as a useful and critical practice for assessing particularly AAPI student experiences.
