Identifying Characteristics of Dissatisfied Teachers of Students With Special Needs: A Cross-Country Investigation With the Teaching and Learning International Survey

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 206C

Abstract

This study aims to identify the characteristics of dissatisfied teachers of students with special needs by using predictive factors of special education teacher attrition. The Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS, 2013) was used to capture international perspectives. The analytic sample consisted of 1,370 teachers from 33 countries. Multiple regression was used to find significant factors to predict teachers’ dissatisfaction. As a result, teacher-student relations, effective professional development, classroom disciplinary climate, and efficacy in classroom management were statistically significant factors which contribute to the satisfaction of teachers in classrooms which contain 60% or fewer students with special needs. This study provides in-depth information on the global trends of teachers’ dissatisfaction. Implications, limitations, and future research were discussed.
