Abstract

This paper presents three case studies of children’s development of financial knowledge and behaviors and the foundations of a financial capability identity during their kindergarten year. In their kindergarten classrooms and their homes, each child had different experiences related to receiving financial education and learning to save. Children were randomly assigned by classroom to one of the three groups: receiving financial education throughout the school year, receiving financial education and having an opportunity to open and contribute to a savings account, and a control group. Three children, one of each group, were selected based on the response extensiveness to gauge insight into how children developed financial knowledge and behaviors and initiated a financial capability identity in these different contexts.
