Examining Rehearsals of Teaching: How Interactions Contribute to Different Opportunities for Learning

Abstract

Rehearsals of teaching have been advocated as a means for supporting pre-service teachers to develop tangible practices and skills that are connected to general principles of teaching, yet the teacher educator facilitating the rehearsal plays a key role in supporting such learning opportunities. In this paper, we present a fine-grained interaction analysis of two contrasting episodes in which the same problem of practice resulted in different opportunities for pre-service teacher learning. We present three types of interactions and illustrate how in each case, differences in the way they were enacted altered the opportunities for learning provided to pre-service teachers. The types of interactions we have identified have implications for supporting novice teacher educators to learn to facilitate rehearsals.
