Developing Allies for Latinx Students: Process, Content, and Reflection

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This study presents data on a course on Latinx Students in Higher Education taught within a Higher Education program at Iowa State University. Through the lens of aspiring ally identity development (Edwards, 2006), this study examines how students engage with content on Latinx issues across the P-20 educational pipeline to better understand and ultimately serve this population in their professional context. Students in the course, especially white students, demonstrated a commitment to social justice, but their journey to build allyship was not without moments of discomfort.
